Perfectly Imperfect

Perfectly Imperfect

In my previous post, I relayed the importance of showing grace to ourselves. Often, throughout our lives, we are our own worst critics. We can be particularly harsh and show ourselves little mercy when we’ve failed or fallen short of our own expectations. And the last thing we want is to share these failures or inadequacies with the rest of the world.

Today, reality TV and social media give us a glimpse into the everyday lives of seemingly ordinary people, showcasing their triumphs as well as their trials, and many of us find ourselves captivated. Creative non-fiction, personal essays, and memoirs are the reality TV of the literary world. Authors such as Anne Lamott, Maya Angelou, and Joan Didion take us on unforgettable journeys through their lives with brutal honesty, baring their souls and often breaking our hearts, but giving us hope in the process.

Most of us, myself included, admire those brave enough to go on a “no holds barred” journey of self-discovery. It’s a process easier to applaud from the sidelines than to participate in ourselves. We’re inspired by the courage to openly explore afflictions and imperfections, and we graciously accept the opportunity to learn from what others have experienced and endured, while saving us from partaking in such a journey ourselves.

The truth is, putting ourselves out there for the entire world to see is a terrifying thought. Letting others in on our imperfections leaves us open to criticism and judgement, two things we zealously avoid.

A Question Of Grace

The sun rising glowing off the sand and the surf

One day last week, The Greatest Kid On The Planet came home from school and told me about a safety drill they had practiced in his classroom. I struggled to keep my expression neutral as my eleven-year-old described the steps he was instructed to take in the event of a “lockdown”. Even then, he asked why I had a strange look on my face. I can’t tell him that every morning I drop him off at the curb in front of his school, and, after wishing him a good day, I drive away and say a prayer.

Recent tragic events have spawned numerous conversations and debates throughout every corner of our country questioning every belief and conviction from religion to politics and all else in between. For the most part, I’ve steered clear of the arena. However, I recently found myself in the midst of one of these conversations which caused me to question one of my own convictions, that being the belief that every person deserves grace.

When I say grace, I’m not referring to forgiveness. Most of us have been taught to forgive others for misdeeds, not because we condone whatever was done, but because we understand that letting go of past hurts helps us find peace.

And I am not referring to godly grace. I will not debate my, or anyone else’s, religious beliefs, as I believe those are choices every person must make for themselves.

Rather, when I speak of grace, I’m referring to the grace that we, as human beings, give to one another as fellow inhabitants on this tiny planet as we all go hurling through space together.

Finding Our Way

Woman walking alone down a snowy road with no direction

Last week my son competed in an oratorical competition at his school. He, along with twenty-one other fifth grade boys and girls, wrote and presented their own speeches on the topic “Where are my Roots of Optimism?” As you can imagine, listening to this group of ten and eleven-year-olds speak about where they get optimism in their lives was truly moving.

This experience gave me the opportunity to speak with my son about optimism during a time when it was a particularly hard message to convey. As it is, for my eleven-year-old, being optimistic comes down to keeping a positive attitude. Unfortunately, for those of us well past our tweens and teens, faced with what seems like an ever-darkening world, keeping a positive attitude can sometimes seem like an impossible task.

Whatever You Say

Man standing on the shoreline staring into the fog

As writers, we choose our words carefully. We labor, sometimes for days, over finding the right words to complete a paragraph, a page, sometimes a single sentence. We know that a single word can change the meaning of what we’re trying to portray.

Everything rides on the words, and we use multiple resources to find the right ones. I, myself, own a seventeen year old, twelve-hundred page Roget’s International Thesaurus that I refuse to give up, and I can spend an interminable amount of time flipping through its pages, hoping to stumble across that certain verb or adjective dancing on the edge of my mind just out of grasp. For some of us, finding the right words can be like finding buried treasure, and it’s with a sense of elation that they spill from our thoughts to our fingertips to become a part of the fabric we’re weaving.
